    WWI "Trench Art" Beer Stein!
The Great War (WWI) lasted 4 years, 3 months, and 2 weeks. During that time, massive amounts of munitions were used, leaving remnants scattered throughout Europe. After the war the nations were faced with cleaning and disposing of this. Many of the nations found creative ways of accomplishing the by turning shell casings and other metal into "Trench Art." This is not Trench Art in the typical reference as pieces made by the soldiers in their "free" time, but, stretching the description to encompass items that were made from the shell casings and remnants found in the trenches and battle grounds. The most common of these are the vases and other containers that came out of France commemorating the various battles fought in their country. Over the years I have found many of these ranging from simplistic casings etched with the name of the town(s) to more elaborately decorated pieces with embossed details.
This is the most unique piece that I found which has been in my personal "stash" for many years now. It is quite detailed in both design and workmanship. the stein is approximately 4¼" in diameter at the base, 3½" in diameter at the top. It is approximately 9½" tall with an approximate 5" handle. I have tried to find casing marks but they have all been buffed off. I believe that it is German in origin and perhaps a result of the sever lack of raw materials and economic woe's at the end of the war.
The stein is in very good condition.
